Blog #9 Mise En Scene pt.1

Bonjour readers, today we will be discussing the French phrase Mise-en-scene and what it means in filmmaking. The meaning of mise-en-scene: how do all elements arranged in a scene that appear on camera dictate the meaning of it. There are eight main terms that help in constructing a scene with this technique in mind, In todays blog we will be discussing the first four pillars of it.

  • Production Design is a visual design for a specific set like how they will use props, graphics, etc to construct the concept of a film.
  • Location this plays a big role in the feel and midd of a scene it also works as a vehicle to establish the action in a film.
  • Studio, is the film studio in the entertainment industry that usually facilitates the big name projects and films we know and love today.
  • Set Design, is everything that the audience sees in a scene to build content and context to the story. Essential it adds to the scene for full understanding by the audience.
Some examples of location and set design include this photo I captured of a interactive pirate play, we see the pirate ship and lighting used to establish the it at sea setting and even smoke to emulate the reality of being out in the ocean.
